Video cars Ford: Walkaround of the 2013MY Ford Mustang GT, Boss 302 and Shelby GT500

Ford has a lot in store for us at this week's 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, with the Blue Oval having already revealed the revamped Flex and Mustang models, while we're still waiting for the brand new Escape crossover. Today, we got our first look at the 2013MY Mustang series that includes the regular V6 and V8 GT models, plus the 444HP Boss 302 and the almighty, Camaro ZL1-rivalling Shelby GT500 with 650 wild ponies under its hood.
As much as we would have liked some video footage showing the refined for the 2013 model year Mustangs on the move, Ford's promotional material simply walks us around the cars detailing the styling changes inside and out.
You can watch all three clips in the videos after the jump.

New Ford Shelby GT500 Packs a Monstrous 650HP and has a Top Speed in Excess of 200MPH, Cars Pictures Ford

2 comments New Ford Shelby GT500 Packs a Monstrous 650HP and has a Top Speed in Excess of 200MPH

By now, you’ve read all about the revamped Mustang, including the high-performance Boss 302 and Laguna Seca versions. It all pales in comparison to the Shelby GT500 that Ford is planning to roll out at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday. Powered by what Ford claims to be the world’s most powerful production V8 engine, the GT500 packs no less than 650-horses and 600 lb-ft of torque.
That’s no typo: the 5.8-liter supercharged V8 has 41 horses more than the McLaren F1, 24 more than the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and an amazing 70 more than the original Lamborghini Murcielago. On the downside, it falls one pony short of the Ferrari Enzo.
A top speed in excess of 200 mph (320 km/h) should make you able to keep up with almost anything on the road, bar a Veyron or a Koenigsegg.
“SVT keeps the Shelby GT500 on the cutting edge of technology and takes muscle car performance to new heights,” said Jost Capito, director of Ford’s Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development.
“We encapsulated every aspect of performance in this car – whether it’s 0-60, top speed, racetrack or quarter-mile times. Beyond that, the daily driver also will find this car perfectly fits his or her needs.”
In order to achieve these numbers, Capito and his team carefully upgraded the V8 by installing a new TVS 2300 supercharger that feeds more air into the engine, cross-drilled block and heads and updated camshaft profile.
Such an engine must create tremendous amount of heat. Therefore the cooling system has been significantly updated and features a larger fan, a fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, a more efficient charge air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and an intercooler heat exchanger with a 36% increased volume.
Ford’s engineers wanted to make sure that the Shelby’s power actually makes it to the rear wheels and doesn't destroy the rest of the powertrain. So they upgraded the dual-disc clutch, transmission and axle and fitted a new driveshaft made out of carbon fiber.
After testing more than 35 gearbox combinations for the six-speed manual transmission, they finally made their decision. The new box has reinforced gears, bearings and housing to handle the massive torque. That’s to be expected considering the performance: what’s surprising is that the chosen transmission enables the Shelby GT500 to be exempt from the gas-guzzler tax…
“It might just seem like we’re putting a bigger engine into the car. But it’s been a balanced approach through and through,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “We’ve completely redone the car to be even more sophisticated in terms of handling and control than the prior model.”
First of all, with that kind of top speed, you sure as hell want to make sure you stay on the tarmac and don’t become airborne. Therefore, the new GT500 offers 33% more downforce compared to the 2011 model thanks to major changes that have optimized airflow, minimized drag and significantly increased downforce.
You also want your 650HP car to catapult from standstill and not just sit there and shred its rear Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G tires to pieces. An SVT-developed launch control that is integrated both with the ECU and the traction control system takes care of that problem. At some point, you’ll have to stop as well and a new Brembo brake system with larger discs on all four corners and six-piston front calipers ensures that you’ll be able to.
Now we’ve ticked the performance, engineering and braking boxes. Have we missed something? Oh, yes: the not-so-small issue of handling.
“We took a completely different approach with this car so drivers can choose their settings instead of a computer making the selection,” Hameedi explains. “Nearly every system the driver interacts with can be tailored to his or her situation including the Bilstein electronic adjustable suspension, launch control, AdvanceTrac and steering assist levels.”
Which means that you can keep the electronic helpers on, for maximum peace of mind, select an intermediate mode for some antics while retaining a safety net, or completely disengage all systems and whet your pants prove your driving skills.
Those wanting more can order the Performance Package that includes a Torsen limited-slip diff, or go all the way with the optional Track Package. The last option includes three separate coolers for the engine oil, the rear differential and the transmission, providing further cooling and preventing those critical components from overheating under extreme driving.
Now, we can’t just get our minds off that Enzo thingy: Mr. Capito, next time make sure you find an extra two ponies. It shouldn’t be that difficult. And then you could brag that your car is even more powerful than an Enzo.

This is not verifiable, but a Shelby GT 350 #6s966 may have been pulled out of a Kansas garage after 30+ years

This story has issues, but notice the photo of the GT 350 doesn't have the H after the GT 350 on the rocker panel decal, and the story claims it is a GT 350 H rent a racer Hertz car with original paint.

the original story http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/apr/02/rare-1966-shelby-gt350-fastback-found-garage-lawre but Jalopnik has the story http://jalopnik.com/#!5787316/how-a-66-shelby-gt350-was-hidden-in-trash-for-26-years as March 30th 2011 and writes that it's a Hertz rent a racer GT 350 H, and the Leake Auction website has no story to go with the photo gallery of the GT 350 that does not have an H after the GT 350.

The CNN video news clip never mentions Hertz. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2011/04/06/dnt.rare.nustang.found.kctv?hpt=T2

Shelby Forums says that this will be written up in the Spring 2011 issue of the Shelby American http://www.shelbyforums.com/forums/1965-1970-shelby-mustang-gt350-gt500/13464-6s966-found-shed.html

I learned about this story from Robert L and his link was to the Kansas City Star article: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/04/09/2789114/rare-car-found-hidden-beneath.html

The SAAC forum addresses this story http://saacforum.com/index.php?topic=12348.0 and in the thread they state it was orignally a GT 350 H red and gold, but now has a replacement engine as well as a repaint

If anyone knows more about this, or has read the spring 2011 Shelby American, please drop me an email and add anything you can to this story

Thanks to Chad Lawhorn the story writer from the Lawrence Journal for sending me the link to the original article!

Shelby Comet. Never heard of that, have you? Did you hear of the Shelby Europa? 14 made

Shelby Europa were just getting started by Claude Dubois, who raced a Ford of Antwerp Shelby Gt 350 in Spa in 1967. They came directly from Ford as semi-finished and completed by Dubois. Now it was not very many, 1971 and 72 made a total of just 14 pieces, including two convertibles.

There are eight survivors, three of were in Sweden, then Norway, then to Finland.

Well, so was there a special European-Shelby prototype, GT250, a 1971 Mercury Comet that Claude supplied with a GT40 289 block and heads, that gave the car more than 350 horsepower. It was a couple of years as Claude's own daily driver before being resold.
Claude was in Dearborn when Ford announced the cessation of the Shelby Fords, and so bought the last 34 or 36. He sold them in Belgium, Paris, Istanbul, Geneva and Germany
Read his 2002 interview here: http://www.ponysite.de/sheleur_dubois3.htm
After 1970 Claude proposed a licensing deal, and bought Mustangs from Bob Ford in Detroit, the first was completed in January 1971 and went to the Brussels Motor show. The Shelby parts came from Shelby American. Some had 351's and at least one was a drag pack 429 http://www.ponysite.de/sheleur.htm

Shelby De Mexico, I learned of them just now, I never heard of Shelby Mavericks either, but here is the scoop (and a reminder about the Shelby Europa)

There's the scoop ( literally ) Naca duct for fresh air and 2 exhaust to keep it cooler under the hood.
Sequential taillights, just like the California Specials (originally from the t-birds)

with hood pins, and the Shelby rims

If you have a Mustang built in Mexico City,
Valencia, Venezuela
Lima, Peru
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
or Sydney, Australia
and want to join the registry, see http://www.hammar.dyndns.org/~mexmust/history.htm

So here's what it's all about:
In 1965, Mexican auto parts distributor Eduardo Velazquez bought a Hi-Po 1965 Mustang hardtop and delivered it to Hi-Performance Motors in Los Angeles for conversion to competitive status. Equipped with a race-ready 289ci engine and the complete Shelby suspension, the Mustang became a winner in Mexico . By the end of 1966, Velazquez's team had won ten of the seventeen events they had raced.

Ford Motor Company, S.A, the Mexican branch of the corporation, had begun producing Mustang hardtops During 1966, Velazquez became a Shelby parts dealer, and the victories provided great promotion for Shelby aftermarket parts for those Mustangs. In 1967, Velazquez formed a friendship and partnership with Carroll Shelby. Their company Shelby de Mexico, would create modified Mustangs to be marketed through Ford of Mexico dealerships.
Velazquez sold one in 1990 and it's sale made for an article in Mustang Monthly in 1991 http://www.hammar.dyndns.org/~mexmust/Articles/m910388.htm

The Shelby de Mexico models of 1967 and 1968 were powered by 289ci engines and looked nearly identical to their 1967 and 1968 stateside namesakes. Production totaled 169 units in 1967 and 203 units in 1968.

The 306 Shelbys produced in 1969 were based on 302hp powered Mustang hardtops, but had fiberglass roofline extensions that created a Fastback look. Their front sheetmetal was near-stock Mustang, but the slightly bulged hoods were fiberglass, their deck lids had spoilers, and the taillights were the 1965 Thunderbird units used by US production 1968 and 1969 Shelbys. Several of the 1969 Shelby de Mexico GT-350s have been brought into the United States during recent years, and two have been featured in Mustang Monthly and other enthusiast magazines.

During those years, Shelby de Mexico campaigned Mustang race cars throughout Mexico , including two Shelby-built 1966 and 1967 Group 2 hardtops. Much advice was received from Al Dowd, Phil Remington, and Lew Spencer at Shelby American, and Carrol! Shelby made a point of attending several races in Mexico . The company created two race cars in 1969 and only one in 1970. Only one of those race-specific models is known to survive.

Shelby de Mexico, during the 1971 model year, built approximately 200 Shelby Mustang GT-351s (Windsor engines) and 300 Shelby Mavericks powered by 302hp engines.

all this info, lifted verbatim because it's dead on and consise: http://sarin.lunarpages.com/~musta4/mustangtrivia/shelbydemexico.htm

But the Shelby Maverick is a real big surprise..

The authoritative write up is from Bob McClurg who made some trips to Mexico and almost bought one, but while he was waiting for delivery, it all went up in smoke, the car and his contact in Mexico disappeared. He first covered the Shelby in Mustang Illustrated February 1991 which is online right here: http://www.darkhorseracing.net/south_of_the_boarder.htm and refreshed with a new look in this months Muscle car

"The 2011 GT350 balances heritage with modern necessity," said Shelby American president Amy Boylan. "Former Hot Wheels and Ford designer Larry Wood joined Vince LaViolette, Walter Cardenas, Andrew Smidt and the rest of our Las Vegas team to help integrate 1965-1970 Shelby styling cues with modern aerodynamics. We worked with Ford Racing to supercharge the engine with a goal of 500 horsepower, as well as to sharpen the handling. Baer Brakes helped engineer the fantastic brakes and we shod the GT350 with 19" modern Cragar wheels and super sticky Goodyear tires. This Shelby is truly a complete performance package"
